KiteShip Corporation
www.kiteship.com

KiteShip builds and sells large traction kites for commercial shipping and yachts worldwide. These reduce ship owners' crippling fuel costs and vastly reduce emissions. In 2005, the world's shipping fleet burned one hundred billion gallons of heavy fuel oil - what is left at the bottom of a barrel of crude after everything useful has been refined out of it. It contains up to 900 times as much sulfur as road diesel, meaning that the world's fleet emits about 50 times as much sulfur dioxide as all of the world's road vehicles combined, while using only 10% of the fuel. The kite simply adds 5-10,000 horsepower directly to the ship. Engine speed is lowered, reducing fuel consumption and emissions by up to 25%, without reducing speed. Benefits to ship owners include increased profitability, reduced engine maintenance, 2-3 year ROI, better competitiveness through lower customer fuel surcharges; environmentally-friendly image; possible green credits. One KiteShip system on one large ship will save two million gallons of fuel a year - equivalent to the gas saved by 6,000 Toyota Priuses. It will eliminate two million pounds of sulfur dioxide emissions a year - the same effect as replacing every automobile in California with a hybrid.

The next large-scale improvement in RO economics will come from the ability to operate at a higher flux - increasing water throughput and therefore production capacity of a desalination or water reuse facility. To support 'high-flux' operations, a membrane must be able to match any increase in permeability with the same or reduced fouling rates. In bench-scale tests, NanoH2O's patent-pending thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane, a nanostructured reverse osmosis membrane, has shown approximately twice the flux of conventional membranes with significant fouling resistance combined with biocidal capabilities. This performance increase is achieved without significant changes to commercial fabrication methods. With a target of doubling the current productivity of RO systems, NanoH2O projects that TFN technology can halve the size an existing RO process plant while maintaining the previous production capacity. The result is approximately a 25% savings in the cost of produced water, making TFN a truly disruptive technology.
